Mike Hadlow on the Buy vs Build debate for technology

I’ve met Mike Hadlow at past Open Spaces Coding Day events, and he’s a really intelligent guy, and I find this post very timely, in light of a recent TTLUG Meet’n’Greet discussion I had with a fellow developer attending.

In my case, the discussion field was around the Trinidad life insurance industry, and the technology in question was bought quite a while ago, written in COBOL for a mainframe system, and my friend (and by extension his IT department) was feeling development pain working within the limitations of this and working around it to build supporting systems to meet the newer requirements arising as the company grew and expanding its portfolio of product offerings to its clients and business partners.

I hope this article provides better light to him on the matter, as he discusses with his collegues the longer term strategy behind continued investment into that part of their core technology systems.
