Article: Rejected By Apple, iPhone Developers Go Underground

I’ve kept away from jailbreaking my iPhone for more than a year now. However, from simple restrictions, like not being able to use my own custom built ringtones, to more complicated issues, like not being able to use my Trinidad carrier’s SIM card in my iPhone while there, I always felt like I was being restricted from accessing the full power of my device.

This really became quite annoying over time. Apple’s recent situation with Google Voice underpins what I continue to think is the iPhone creator’s biggest flaw, attempting to hold an iron fist of control over a creative platform driven mainly by its passionate users’ demands.

At the end of the day, the iPhone’s popularity is driven by its applications as well as its design, and if developers of these applications cannot feel secure that their efforts will only be judged by the quality of their code and how well it satisfies the niche of users they target, the need for jailbreaking and alternative “iPhone App Stores” like Cydia will continue to exist.
