With this free music service, a web interface is a definite plus for me, as there’s nothing to download, so I don’t need to worry about if I am in Windows or Linux, a big one-over on Spotify.
It relies on Flash to provide its interface features, which makes things stay almost as slick as the Spotify application.
The music searches I did were just as rich as Spotify’s listings, however the French origination of the web application meant some translations are still needed when using it. For example the UK as a country is listed as Royaume-uni, which kinda mucks up an already non-UX friendly friend search since friend searches are by country.
For the non-French speaking I can see this being a bit daunting and a possible deal-breaker for adopting the site quickly and really getting into its rich social networking features. This is a major sell advantage over Spotify, which mimics its interface more heavily on Apple iTunes, which did allow quick adoption for the new user of its music player features, but wasn’t so intuitive for knowing what social networking features are there.
All in all, Deezer’s definitely on my radar from now on as a music application to keep an eye on as both it and Spotify try to figure out their business model in the still volatile online music market.
